This unit covers standards for grades 1–3.
The goal of the TouchMatch Upper Grades Addition and Subtraction 2 Unit is to extend the concepts of and fluency with addition and subtraction mastered in Unit 1. This includes using various strategies with operations, strengthening the relationship between addition and subtraction, applying sequences and patterns as computational aids, and employing a wide range of visual cues. Unit 2 continues to focus on the TouchMath approach, which uses TouchPoints to associate numerals and quantities, strengthening the understanding of number.
Engaging activities are presented in an intentional sequence with attention to learning style, scaffolding of concepts and vocabulary, and pacing. The skills progress from counting to using sequences and patterns. A review of operations with one-digit numbers ensures fluency with 20. The activities and skills progress to computation with 100, first without and then with regrouping. Activities flow from the kinesthetic to the kinesthetic/pictorial to the pictorial to the pictorial/abstract and finally to the abstract developmental level. Students have opportunities to build a firm foundation with each step before progressing to the next level.
The approach used throughout the unit is based on the Universal Design for Learning to present information in multiple ways. This design has been scientifically proven to assist students with disabilities in attaining higher achievement. When students finish this unit, they should be able to add and subtract within 1,000, applying processes and algorithms for computation with whole numbers.
