This unit covers standards for grades 3–5.
The goals of TouchMath Upper Grades Unit 5: Multiplication and Division 2 are to strengthen concepts and build proficiency with multi-digit numbers. These skill presentations are grounded in the TouchMath approach. The factors are presented in sequential order with an increasing number of digits, working from one digit by one digit and progressing to four digits by two digits.
The seven modules each build on the one preceding it: Multiplication by One Digit, Division by One Digit, Multiplication Using the Algorithm, Division Using the Algorithm, Multiplication by Two Digits, Division by Two Digits, and Mixed Practice. The activities are scaffolded from no regrouping/no remainders to gradual inclusion of regrouping/remainders using TouchMath kinesthetic/visual cues and skip counting. Algorithms for both operations are introduced with acronyms to aid recall. Rectangular arrays, area models, and graphic organizers encourage an increased rate of learning and success. Mixed practice includes the use of calculators for checking and solving problems with multi-digit numbers.
Throughout the unit, bubble answers accustom students to more formal testing procedures. They are mixed in with written answers in the modules, but the unit review and the unit pre- and post-tests require only bubble answers.
The unit provides instructional accommodations through the TouchMath approach and materials. Research supports the use of these modifications for students with learning disabilities. When students complete this unit, they will demonstrate proficiency with multiplication and division of four digits by two digits.
